This afternoon my daughter called me, very distraught. She had borrowed the truck of a good friend and the battery died as she was trying to get gas. She was stuck in a gas station, and did I have jumper cables? No, I don't, but I will come, I said.
I drove to the gas station. Child was asking people who drove in for gas if they had cables, and no one fessed up. Suddenly, her face lit up, and she ran to the street. There was an Oakland County, MI sheriff department car sitting in the left turn lane.
Child is just a thin slip of a very pretty young lady. She was dressed in clean jeans and a t-shirt, with no makeup on and her long hair in a pony tail, as is appropriate for someone moving items from one home to another. She went to the officer and said, "Sir, I am stranded here. Do you by chance have jumper cables?"
What man, let alone a well-provisoned officer of the law could turn that down?
That particular officer did. He said, "No," and took off.
I felt like a witness to a very bad accident.

I would report him..he is lying I bet.
What an ASSHOLE,....Anne
maybe he didn't like girls?? ;) either way what a jerk! rose~
That happened to me once when I was barely more than a teenager except it was me and one of my girlfriends stranded after a midnight movie. The officer claimed that they were't "allowed" to help and took off leaving two young girls alone in a dark deserted parking lot. I don't know if that's true that that aren't allowed to help. Maybe we should ask Remo?
Were you guys able to find jumper cables?
Most police agencies don't allow equip their patrol cars with jumper cables anymore. Too many instances of people claiming their cars were "damaged" in the process and too many frivilous lawsuits. Even our fire dept makes the citizens sign a waiver before they will unlock someone's car doors. I don't even have a spare tire in my trunk anymore, instead I have to call-out someone from our transportation division (at overtime) to drive to the fleet yard, get the tire truck, drive to my location and change the tire.
Forget the cables. Tell her keep a nice tube of lip gloss handy. THAT I'll stop for...
That is heartbreaking. I don't know how many times I have been rescued by officers with cables, or with other handy items. One even changed a tire for me, with AAA on the way! He didn't want to keep the girls up too late...
Oh that sucks!
I bet that if she had been stranded in these parts, no officer would have turned her away, they would have found her some cables!
Sorry that it has taken me so long to get by here!!
hugs,
Kathi
I'm stunned. I can't believe NO ONE would help out.
