While in general I cannot fault the architecture on my condo, there is one major fault that I don't like. The a/c unit is outside right next to my bedroom window. Whenever it goes on, I wake up. Roomie's a/c unit is right next to it - often when hers goes on, I wake up wondering why mine is going on since it's set to 82 degrees at night. it drops to 75 degrees at 8 am, it goes on, and I wake up. Who needs an alarm clock?
Lately, mine sounds like it has rocks in it. I am wondering if the lawn service has actually knocked some small rocks in. If so, how do I get them out? I think this happened in my former house, and the thing continued to slog on day after day for 25 years, but I probably run my a/c less than most people do. I like to be warm and damp ;-)
Any suggestions?
I tried going to Google and typing in "my a/c sounds like it has rocks in it," and I got way more information than I need about a certain rock and roll band - ac/dc. So I decided to ask the experts.
You guys do know, right?

I was married to a Commercial Refrigeration Mechanic so I didn't have to know nothin'. He installed ours and placed the unit by the girls bedroom. They were so happy to get that air they didn't complain. I try to always turn mine off when the yard man is working. I have heard if it comes on while he is mowing or trimming the unit will suck that grass into it and need to be cleaned more often. Hope there is an expert here to answer your question. Paula
Hmmm I asked my husband and he said something could be in the fan or fan could be bent and hitting something. Do you have to pay to have your air conditioner looked at? Janie
Ours made a noise then quit working. It was nothing major, can't recall what it was but it cost around 80.00.
My air conditioner manual says that it will make noises
when it is defrosting. It will sound like something knocking
around for a few minutes, then it will stop. If it keeps doing
it, you should probably have it looked at.
If nothing is wrong with it, why not do something to drown
out the noise? If you dont like it cold in the house at night,
why dont you put a fan in your doorway blowing out of the
room, just for the noise? I can't sleep without a fan blowing.

Sorry, I recently acquired the first air conditioner of my life, and need to learn more about it (who knew you had to clean them out once in awhile?) I googled a bit and found out that sometimes there's loose hardware making an air conditioner noisy:

I always rely on the service man. I don't know and would call the experts. 'On Ya' - ma
Call a reputable a/c & heating company and let them service your unit twice a year. It is worth the money and the piece of mind. They check you system in ways in which you can't and they will do the same with your heat system. Even though it is new, it will live a longer life if you have it serviced regularly. Anne
AC problems I know nothing about. I wish you luck!

You can take the cover off (after you turn the unit off) and look. It is possible to have a twig or something in the the bottom of the unit. When it kicks on, the air flow causes it to float toward the blades. IT's just an empty box save for the blade and motor. You'll be suprised!

This "guy" don't know Jack...sorry...
How are you?

I'm still chuckling at getting ac/dc when you googled. As for the real AC can't help with that one hon. Hope you can get it worked out, if not crank up the AC/DC and rock along with it. (Hugs)Indigo
I'm much more of an expert on the band than I am on rocks in your AC -- sorry, no help from me -- but rock on! LOL! Martha :-)
nope sorry, sounds like time for a professional! rose
Where have you been, Miss Suzy? I hope all is well with you.
