Can we get some new font options here?
While I can navigate pretty well through the world wide web and can do most of the simple up to the not-quite-so-simple operations on a computer, I confess to having no knowledge whatsoever regarding anything made by Apple. If I use a mac, it's because someone set it all up for me to get my email off it. I haven't a clue how they work. I understand they are more user friendly and probably superior, but Microsoft is more popular and it's easier to get things that are compatible with Windows. I admit to taking the easy route.
I had this vague thought that it might be nice to borrow the Child's iPod for my trip. I don't process noise well, and having music might be useful to keep me from sticking a fork up someone's nose. While walking today with Late (Yes! I walked! Maybe only 5 miles, but it's a start.) we pulled into the Apple store. My thoughts had progressed from borrowing an iPod for music to getting one of my own that does movies.
It's impressive to me to hold a small little plastic box that can play full length movies very clearly on little tiny screens. When I was born, TVs were very new. We had a remote - that means my parents and my brother made me get up to change channels. There was a big dial, and I turned it to get to one of the 4 channels we had. Today's technology seems to be aiming for both the biggest and the smallest screens possble.
So, I asked the sales girl if there is a way I can view NetFlix movies on an iPod or iTouch. I don't want to buy movies from iTunes, I want to view them once and move on. I am not a repeat watcher. (OK, I saw Batman twice.) She said no, then she also added: (1) Maybe, (2) Probably, (3) Probably not, but maybe, (4) I am not sure, (4) Maybe some of them, if they aren't something or another, (5) Sure, (6) Let me check. (The last was in response to my question, "Could you ask someone here who might know the answer?"
She came back with pretty much the same answer. She didn't tell me that iTunes will soon be renting out movies themselves. It doesn't matter, since they won't be available to me soon enough, and it doesn't sound like they will have much of a list available anyway. Late and I continued to check out the toys, and a sales guy joined us. We asked him the same basic question. His answer?
"If you can find the right software online, yes, you can." Then he seemed to reconsider his answer and went through pretty much the same list as the sales girl. However, I had heard what I needed to hear, so we said thanks, and left. I planned to go home and look up what I needed to see. So far, none of the software I have found works with Vista, but I haven't tried really hard yet.
I sent an email to a friend to ask for advice, and he told me that he bought an iPod and just wiped the whole iTunes thing off and replaced it with something else that will do any MP3 song.
Honestly, I still don't get it.
I think I will just pack an extra book, and avoid touching any forks.

Sorry that I can not help you. I am not computer smart. Sure wishing you luck with finding what you are looking for. Have a great week. Janie
Nice to hear someone else gets a little confused when I get a lot confused. Paula
I sent just sent you what I know. BUT I just had a thought...if you got the apple iPhone, I BET you could get to NetFlicks that way and watch your movies. At this time, iTunes doesn't rent.
Greedy bastards.
I think there is a way to load them on the phone though, or even the iPod.
Um, now I think there is something you need to be attending to...;)

I only have the little iPod that does music only. It saves me on flights with crying babies. It doesn't help with stinky babies. (Not sure if you saw that entry or not in my journal)
Someone tried to tell me how to get music without going through iTunes but, I was completely lost and felt like a 4 year old who was sitting in a college calculus class. Meaning I was feeling totally lost and of no help to you.

Tracy downlaods movies off of limewire FREE and watches them on her lap top. you could do that NOW there is a onetime 34 dollar fee but that is lifetime. we all inmy house have limewire off my one ttime fee and we all download music and movies off it even tv series. then you watch and delte them as often as you want. I think that would be the answer for you put them on a lap top
Sounds like a good plan. Doc has his Mac........or does he call it an apple? All I know is I can do lots of things that he can't do. He will never get a virus, know why? Because nobody will email him more than once or twice. He took over my i pod last Christmas and has been using it ever since. Well, it does keep him quiet. I miss my old walkman of days gone by. Have fun in Florida and don't get a sun burn. Anne
good luck with the movie thing:) Happy New Years

I have a video iPod...haven't a clue how to put a movie on it, though I would love to! Although, walking and trying to watch a movie might not be a good idea :) klutz that I am! I'll stick to music!

My kids have the video Ipods. I have no idea how they work. I just know I pay $2 a download for the movies! Have a good New Year!

I heard they legalized the sale of absinthe in the U.S.
Just what I needed this close to retirement.
Truth be told, what those folks don't want to tell you is that there is pretty much a way to do anything and everything with a computer, what's in question is the legality of it all.
They aren't really going to tell you things they shouldn't (the old adage that "just because you CAN do something, doesn't mean you should...) about using their products.
It's a whole lot of work to get movies "illegally" into an iPod. Just as you can rip music from the CD's you buy, there are ways to get the same results with movies. But the movie industry has put a lot more effort into preventing you from doing it than the music industry.
Short answer, it's just not worth the effort at the moment. Apple will probably figure out a way to rent movies to you, but right now they're happy selling them since people will pay their price.
Take it from someone who has too much time on his hands, and tries this stuff all the time. :)
in the meantime, no forking anyone, ok? Happy New Year!
Some days I'm truly glad I'm missing out on things like Ipods, and such being Deaf. It seems they are more trouble than they are worth. I have enough just keeping up with my computer as it is. Wishing you a Happy Belated Birthday and a wonderful, loving New Year all the year long. (Hugs) Indigo
Yes, a book would be perfect! I don't get it either. Want me to ask my kids?
Martha :-)
I need much more info than "I am not sure"! I can be confused ALL BY MYSELF; I do not need any extra help to do that! LOL! Pack the book...and enjoy your trip! J

Enjoy your trip!

Kathi
Hi Suzy....Sharon from Coastal Comfort. I wish I could have met you while visiting FLA recently too. iTunes? Hmmmm....they are so very different from any other mp3 player....only iTunes for iStuff....unless you save them to a CD and convert. That's all I know! Not much help.
I looked at my neices's iPod over Christmas, and the thing confused the hell out of me. LOL
