Moving thoughts

Since I am most likely moving within a couple of weeks, I decided it's time to start packing. I don't like to rush into things. I have been in this house for 30 years and am not the neatest person on the block. Clean maybe, but not particuarly neat. I like things I need to be at hand and things I don't need can be some place else. Doesn't much matter to me where "some place else" is.

The boxes are filling up my dining room and living room, and so far are empty. I take that back. I filled four of them today. I emptied out most of my linen closet. I am exhausted.

Some of you have moved many times, and certainly more recently than I have. All I can remember is to not mix up stuff in boxes, label top and side, and it helps to also write down what is in them. Don't overload.

Personally, I think it would be much more fun to leave off any kind of labels, and just go for the surprise. There is a chance I will end up with shoulder surgery still and child may end up having to help me with unpacking, I guess I have to give up the idea of walking on the wild side. She can yell loud enough to wake the dead - in another state.

I can't even figure out for sure where to put the full boxes. I have an almost empty family room the size of a small restaurant, but this is a four level home. I don't want to drag boxes up and down stairs any more than necessary. It makes sense to me to put full boxes in the dining room on the main floor, and drag the dining room table down the stairs. I could just stack boxes on top of and under the table and leave it in place. Which would look less disgusting to prospective buyers?

My hat is off to anyone who can just pack up and move without fretting. I spent 15 minutes trying to decide about curling irons.

Tomorrow I am getting two more loads of boxes and I need to get some kind of a path going here or I am going to be looking at a fire and emergency hazard. Who knew boxes took up so much space?

At least with the condo I will have so much dead space in the foyer area that I can pileeverything I own in there and get a frontloader to drag it all out.

I see why I have put off moving since my divorce, 22 years ago. My personality and moving are like oil and water. Perhaps it's more accurate to use the comparison of gasoline and fire.

Any advice regarding moving will be gratefully received. I did finally start a list of whom needs to be notified when I move.

Yesterday I finally went inside my condo for the first time in about 6 weeks. It does look lovely, it really does. They are about to start pressuring me to close. My house has not even had a nibble yet.

We moved twice last year and it no fun whatsoever. I always wait to the last minute to pack and vow to never pack like that again.

Labeling each box on all sides helps out so much when you move so when you take stuff into the new place you know where to put it. That way you can unpack room by room and that is such a btter way to go trust me.

I also pack up each room individually instead of a little here and a little there in each room. That way each room has it's own pile of packed boxes and will easily go into your new house all at once instead of boxes from several different rooms going in at once.

Did that make any sense?

That's about all I know to suggest.

Moving is a bitch and I do not envy you.

I bet your new place looks so beautiful. I can't wait to see pictures of it when you are all moved in.......hoping you get some nibbles and a bite realllll soon.

I moved about 10 months ago. No notice, just came home after Hurricane Katrina and started moving things out.  Out the front door to the curb for things which couldn't be saved.  Out the back door to whatever vehicle was available to move those things which could be saved.   No rhyme or reason.  Just stuff it into garbage bags, boxes, trash cans or anything else which would "hold something".   All of that was done while wading in about 3 inches of STINKING mud left behind by the flood. Everything I saved from the 2 feet of flood water that entered my house, which is 3 feet off the ground, was moved to a building across town.  When I started moving into temporary housing and had to locate such things as linens, pots and pans and other personal things, it was like going to a huge extremely disorganized rummage sale.  Just dig and look.  Of course, there were those times when we very happily uncovered something that was "saved" that we had not known about for sure.  I'm still not back in my house and I still have to go and dig thru my stuff periodically.  I have organized it a bit, but it is still and adventure trying to find things.  One thing though, ....I now know that most of the "stuff" I owned was not necessary to sustain life.
But we were one of the "lucky" ones.  My house stood.  Most of my neighbors' homes were leveled.

Good luck with your move.  And remember, when in doubt, just throw it out.

Here is my advice....

Hire someone to pack it and move it away. I hear there is one company that is CHEAP.

Being I am still reaping the benefits of just moving, I seriously recommend this one.

My advice is ... don't pack anything that you
don't either really, really need or really, really
love.

Donate a lot of your 30 years worth of accumulation
to charity and get a nice clean start in your new place.

BTW ... I hate moving, do not envy you one bit.
And ... did you get the part about the child helping with
the unpacking in writing? Yes... you should really try get
that in writing ;-)

When we moved to Indiana Joe's company hired a moving company for us. We were to do nothing. They were to come in and do all the packing.  I fretted and fretted about it. When the boxes arrived, they were all marked, "Bedroom Upstairs" etc......what  a chore finding everything. Ying and Yang.

I would soooo have a garage sale of all the things that you have accumulated over the years and dont need. That will save some on the packing. I hate moving and have done it several times now. We have been in this apartment for 2 months now and still have a few stray boxes here and there that havent been unpacked!

Hey Suzy!

Here's a little tip that will help you on both ends.  Packing and unpacking that is.

Do NOT use newspaper to wrap glass/dishes etc.  You will just have a mess on your hands.  Literally.

I found using "lunch bags" when possible to wrap glasses and any other small items is the way to go.
They make for quick and easy wrapping; while offering a bit of protection.  Easy to unwrap and no nasty ink residue.

I hope this helps.
I can't imagine moving after 30 years.  Whew!
Good luck to you,
Niki

Whatever you learn about moving....takes notes.  Or...I'll just refer back to your journal.  I think I'm going to need a lot of advice before too long.
