My brother has five children. Three are his, two are from his wife's first marriage. I adore all of them equally. Three of them are married and have eight combined children. One of the youngest, age 5, is having a birthday party today. I always enjoy going and seeing the family, catching up on news.
The hard part for me is the gifts. What does a five year old hyperactive, intelligent boy need? His parents and grandparents buy him every toy ever created. I tend to get things that require imagination. When my daughter was younger, I refused to get her toys that used batteries. She is very self-entertaining, artistic, and creative. I think this is at least partly due to the fact that her toys were not the kind that you turn on and they entertain you. She could play for hours with a shoe box and a few shoulder pads. She would make a house and people.
Anyway, I tend to buy the kids things like play-doh, notebooks, markers, crayons, flashlights (one exception to the no-battery rule), magnifying glasses, books, jewlery kits, tools, and things along that line. Last year I gave this nephew a set of plastic golf clubs and a bug kit. The parents always look a little nervous when I show up, ever since the ant farm incident. This year I am at a total loss of what to get.
Lots of you are parents of young children or have young siblings. Any suggestions for me? I am just sitting here looking out at yet another 3 inches of new snow and trying to come up with an idea. One time I wanted to get him a pencil box and fill it with quarters, but my daughter said that was stupid. This derision comes from the child who used to play with my silver dollars for hours.
This is the same nephew whom I watched for a few hours before Christmas so his mom could go shopping. When she came for him, I was literally cringing in my chair, the dogs were whimpering behind the chair, and he was flapping around the living room on my exercise ball. I was telling him that we do not bleed on the carpet and he should be a little more cautious. I was so glad to see my niece! I had to give him a plastic fork when I fed him because he kept deliberately scraping the fork across the plate and tapping it, making horrid noises. He is an extremely busy child.
Sigh. What do I know about little boys? I raised a girl. She is afraid of spiders and thinks camping out is the Holiday Inn. Last week I came home and she was in the bathroom screaming over a little house spider. She was standing on the toilet seat and refused to move until I got the spider out of there. I considered either leaving it or taking pictures, but I was laughing too hard to hold the camera.

How about a camera? A disposable & an album would be cool. Santa brought Pie one for Christmas one year & she had fun taking pics:)
I cant buy for boys either, I am a girly girl and have helped raise girls, no boys..lol

How about Board games appropriate for his age group. He would be learning alot while playing. Such as: counting, sportsmanship, taking direction, reading, etc. An old fashion deck of cards with a book on card games. Or how about, a fishing pole. It could start a lifetime love for the favorite pass time, fishing. Or maybe tickets of some sort. Such as for a science museum, A local circus show, A Zoo or animal farm. Or maybe a gift of swim lessons from the local YMCA.
Good Luck And God Bless.

I'm reading too late to make a suggestion. I hope that you found something that you were happy with. I know...it's very hard, these kids are used to being entertained!
Ant Farm, Lol, Suzy, with the Ants??? My cousin had one of those, and I was fascinated. They're so disciplined. I think that's a great gift!
When in doubt give an Etch-A-Sketch for the five year olds. Granted it's not high tech, but it's still a good gift.
It really upsets me when I give something to someone and they're ungrateful. It reflects on the person giving the gift, not the giver whose only intention was to bring joy with a gift.
It's not the gift, it's the idea that you thought enough of the person to get them one in the first place. I say "Thank you" whether I can use the item or not, and just chalk it up to the fact that they picked it out and wanted me to have it so it becomes a treasure for me.
Best wishes,
Debi
Once Bailey loved magic tricks!
It's late for a suggestion, but I think your quarter idea was great. My sensei always gives kids the dollar coins in how many years old they are. They are always very impressed.
I love the quarter idea..My boys love coins.
I kind of steer away from battery operated toys also. I have a few exceptions though..
Love Playdoh..also I bought my son for his birthday this set called Magnetix. It's these little plastic disc things that have magnets in them. Then you use the metal marbles to "build" things. You can get the small set for about $20 bucks.

I think you give great gifts.... that is what I always tried to do for my kids. Do they still sell the Zolo Toys??? They are very artsy plastic pieces that can be put together to create fantastical creatures. Colorful, delightful for all ages (I would LOVE some!!!) and my kids adored them. That is my best guess. I think Toys R Us used to carry them. Good luck and I think you are marvelous!!!! judi
I know this is too late for the birthday party, but you're looking out the window at freshly fallen snow and you can't think what to get a five-year-old boy? A sled or a snow board or one of those saucer things would be my best guess. My boys always loved action figures: Spiderman, Star Wars figures, wrestling characters, Power Rangers, sports figures. Very good for the imagination and no batteries.
Boys love balls, by this I mean the round, bouncy kind, not their own, and anything outdoorsy. Maybe a 5 y/o is too young for an archery set, but a lot of things come with safety tips now. These ain't your uncle's lawn jart days of yore.
Go to a toy store and watch young boys. They will lead you to the holy grail. Never ever get them books or clothes. They will think you hate them, Aunt Suz.
Oh Suz, Every year on their birthday, I give the grandkids their own "whoopie cushion" Go to walgreens or world market and they are under $2.00. No matter what they get for their birthday, THIS will be their favorite present. This falls into the...sad but true catagory! ;-) Anne
